California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed his support for the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act’s preventive care mandate. This mandate obliges private insurers to provide coverage for specific preventive services, including screenings for cardiovascular disease, various cancers, and dental and vision check-ups for infants and children, without any cost to consumers.
“Preventive care saves lives and lowers healthcare costs, and this decision keeps that care within reach for all Americans,” stated Attorney General Bonta. He further emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant in defending Californians against potential threats to these essential services.
The case stems from a March 2023 ruling by a Texas district court that found it unconstitutional to require private insurers to cover certain preventive services. The Fifth Circuit partially upheld this decision in June 2024. Subsequently, the case was brought before the Supreme Court. Attorney General Bonta participated by joining a multistate amicus brief advocating for continued access to preventive healthcare across the United States.
