In a dramatic turn of events, a San Francisco resident has taken legal action against a well-known grocery chain and its affiliates following a severe injury sustained on their premises. Alfonso Newton filed a complaint on August 28, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, against Whole Foods Market California, Inc., Whole Foods Market, Inc., Amazon.com, Inc., Del-Camp Investments, Inc., and several unnamed defendants.

The case stems from an incident that occurred on May 12, 2024. Newton was seated outside the lounge area at the Whole Foods Market located at 2950 24th Street in San Francisco when the chair he was sitting on broke into pieces. This sudden collapse caused him to fall backward and lose consciousness. The fall resulted in serious injuries that required immediate medical attention at UCSF Medical Center. According to the complaint filed by Sweet James LLP on behalf of Newton, he suffered physical injuries including pain to the back of his head, right hip pain, shoulder pain, neck pain radiating to his shoulder blade and lower back, hand tremors, headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

Newton’s legal team argues that the defendants were negligent in maintaining safe conditions at their premises. They allege that prior to the incident, the defendants knew or should have known about the dangerous condition of the furniture through actual or constructive notice but failed to take appropriate actions such as repairing or warning patrons about it. The lawsuit claims that this negligence directly led to Newton’s injuries and subsequent suffering.

The plaintiff is seeking various forms of relief from the court. These include repayment for all special damages incurred such as past and future wage loss along with hospital and medical expenses. Additionally, Newton seeks general damages according to proof presented during trial proceedings. The complaint also requests prejudgment interest as allowed by law and coverage for costs associated with bringing forth this suit.

Representing Alfonso Newton is attorney Mark Iodice from Sweet James LLP based in Newport Beach. The case has been assigned Case No.: CGC-25-628618 in front of Judge Wilma Corrales who serves as Deputy Clerk for this matter within San Francisco’s Superior Court system.
