In a gripping legal drama unfolding in Sacramento, a couple has filed a lawsuit against multiple healthcare providers, alleging medical negligence that resulted in severe health consequences. On September 11, 2025, Yesenia Wilkey and Erik Wilkey filed a complaint in the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, accusing Daniel Edward Carter, M.D., Sacramento Valley Hospitals dba Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, and American Medical Response Ambulance Service, Inc. of failing to provide adequate medical care.

The plaintiffs recount a harrowing experience beginning on November 29, 2024. Yesenia Wilkey experienced dizziness and nausea at home with her children. Her husband Erik was informed and promptly called emergency services. A neighbor certified in CPR also intervened, observing Yesenia’s impaired speech and inability to focus. Despite these alarming symptoms suggesting neurological issues, the responding ambulance service allegedly failed to conduct a thorough assessment for stroke or other serious conditions.

Upon arrival at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, Dr. Daniel Edward Carter assessed Yesenia but did not perform a complete neurological evaluation or stroke assessment despite noting possible intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral vascular accident as differential diagnoses. Instead, he focused on gastrointestinal symptoms and discharged her without ruling out more severe conditions.

The complaint highlights significant lapses in standard medical procedures by both the ambulance service and hospital staff. The plaintiffs assert that these failures led to delayed diagnosis and treatment of a cerebellar infarct identified later through an MRI at Kaiser Permanente. The delay resulted in missed opportunities for timely intervention that could have mitigated the stroke’s impact.

Yesenia Wilkey claims substantial injuries leading to permanent disability due to the defendants’ alleged negligence. The lawsuit seeks compensation for general damages exceeding the court’s minimum jurisdictional limits, special damages for medical expenses and lost earnings, and damages for loss of consortium suffered by Erik Wilkey due to his wife’s condition.

Representing the plaintiffs are attorneys Drew M. Widders and Blair H. Widders from Wilcoxen Callaham LLP. The case is being heard under Case No. 2SacrwOe1 OSS in the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento.
