In a striking legal battle, a former employee has filed a comprehensive lawsuit against his previous employer, alleging severe labor violations and discrimination. The complaint was filed by Anwar Jamaal Hughes on August 21, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, against Donaghy Sales, LLC and Evelia Monreal. Hughes accuses the defendants of multiple breaches of California labor laws and discriminatory practices that exacerbated his medical condition.

Anwar Jamaal Hughes began working for Donaghy Sales, LLC in March 2023 as a beverage merchandiser. Despite being diabetic, he was promised stable employment with regular hours crucial for managing his condition. However, Hughes claims that the company systematically exploited him by imposing grueling work schedules without proper meal or rest breaks essential for his diabetes management. He alleges that Donaghy Sales implemented a dual time tracking system designed to extract maximum labor while avoiding compensation obligations. This system created an impossible compliance situation where employees could never satisfy both systems simultaneously, leading to accusations of “stealing time” when performing necessary pre-shift activities.

Hughes further asserts that the company’s failure to provide required meal and rest periods not only violated California law but also endangered his health. The denial of these breaks allegedly led to serious complications from his diabetes, including foot ulcers threatening amputation. In response to these dire conditions, Hughes filed a workers’ compensation claim but faced retaliation instead of support. The company allegedly interfered with his access to appropriate medical care and engaged in retaliatory actions after he complained about labor violations.

The lawsuit outlines numerous causes of action including disability discrimination under FEHA (Fair Employment and Housing Act), failure to accommodate disability needs, wrongful termination in violation of public policy, and whistleblower retaliation among others. Hughes seeks compensatory damages exceeding $150,000 for lost wages and medical expenses along with punitive damages ranging from $2 million to $5 million due to the egregious nature of the alleged conduct.

Representing Hughes is Eli Banayan from Bana Legal Group P.C., who argues that Donaghy Sales’ systematic exploitation reflects a broader pattern affecting all merchandising employees at the company. The case highlights significant issues regarding workplace rights and employer responsibilities under California law.
