A California resident has filed a lawsuit against her former employer, alleging discrimination and wrongful termination. Jennifer Billings, through her attorneys at The Sentinel Firm, APC, filed the complaint on November 6, 2025, in the Superior Court of California for the County of Sacramento against Straight Line Roofing & Construction, LLC.
The case centers around Billings’ claims that she faced multiple violations under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and other California labor laws. According to the complaint, Billings was employed by Straight Line Roofing & Construction in August 2023 as part of their human resources department. However, her employment took a turn after she suffered an injury at work in July 2025 when she tripped over a piece of metal protruding from a doorway. Despite notifying her employer about her injury and providing medical documentation indicating restrictions due to a broken knee, Billings alleges that the company failed to accommodate her disability or engage in an interactive process to facilitate her continued employment under these conditions.
The complaint details how Billings began physical therapy sessions but faced increased job assignments and criticism from her employer when she needed time off for medical appointments. Her condition worsened by September 2025, leading to further medical evaluations and updated work restrictions which were allegedly ignored by Straight Line Roofing & Construction. Shortly after returning to work with these updated restrictions on September 15, 2025, Billings was informed of her termination.
Billings contends that her dismissal was motivated by discrimination based on her physical disability and need for accommodations. She accuses Straight Line Roofing & Construction of failing to take reasonable steps to prevent discrimination and retaliation, violating the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), and breaching various sections of the California Labor Code related to employee rights and workplace conditions.
In seeking redress from the court, Billings demands general compensatory damages for lost wages and benefits as well as punitive damages aimed at penalizing the defendants for their alleged wrongful conduct. She also seeks reimbursement for legal fees incurred during this process.
Representing Jennifer Billings are attorneys Seung L. Yang, Brett M. Gunther, and Jonathan F. Kaldas from The Sentinel Firm based in Los Angeles. The case is being overseen by Judge Decker Denuth under Case No. 250026990.
