In a significant legal development, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against a prominent healthcare provider, alleging multiple violations of labor laws and unfair business practices. The complaint was filed by Joanne Ibay on October 13, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, targeting Stanford Health Care as the defendant.
The lawsuit claims that Stanford Health Care systematically violated various provisions of the California Labor Code and engaged in unfair competition. According to the complaint, Ibay worked for Stanford Health Care from May 2022 until October 1, 2025. During this period, she alleges that she and other similarly situated employees were classified as non-exempt but were not provided with legally mandated meal and rest breaks or compensated properly for overtime work. The complaint outlines several specific allegations including failure to pay minimum wages as required under Cal. Lab. Code §§ 1194, 1197 & 1197.1; failure to pay overtime wages in violation of Cal. Lab. Code § 510; and failure to provide accurate itemized wage statements in violation of Cal. Lab. Code § 226.
Ibay asserts that Stanford Health Care’s practices constituted an unlawful business practice under California’s Unfair Competition Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 17200). The plaintiff claims that the company’s policy of rounding time worked resulted in employees being paid less than their actual hours worked, which led to forfeited wages for minimum wage and overtime compensation as well as off-duty meal breaks.
The lawsuit seeks various forms of relief from the court including an injunction to prevent further unlawful conduct by Stanford Health Care, restitution for unpaid wages and penalties for past violations, interest on owed amounts, attorney fees, and costs associated with bringing the action forward. Additionally, Ibay demands one hour of pay for each workday where meal or rest periods were not provided as required by law.
