In a tragic turn of events, a couple is seeking justice for the untimely death of their newborn, allegedly due to medical negligence. On December 5, 2025, Jamie Bui and Alan Bui filed a complaint in the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento against Sutter Valley Hospitals doing business as Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, Sutter Medical Group, Dr. Carrie Yiakis, Dr. Christiana Kopf, and several unnamed defendants.

The case revolves around the unfortunate demise of Noah Bui, born on February 9, 2025. The plaintiffs allege that the defendants failed to manage Jamie Bui’s labor and delivery according to standard medical practices. Initially scheduled for a C-section on February 11 due to her previous pregnancy complications, Jamie went into spontaneous labor on February 9. Despite being aware of the risks associated with vaginal delivery after a C-section and the potential need for an emergency C-section, the defendants allegedly did not provide adequate monitoring or timely intervention. The lawsuit claims that this led to severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in Noah Bui due to prolonged bradycardia during labor. Tragically, despite efforts including therapeutic whole-body cooling post-delivery, Noah passed away on February 12.

The plaintiffs are accusing the defendants of wrongful death under Code of Civil Procedure section 377.60 and medical malpractice through a survival action under CCP §377.20. They also charge negligent infliction of emotional distress towards both Jamie and Alan Bui individually and claim loss of consortium by Alan Bui.

Jamie and Alan Bui are seeking damages for multiple reasons: non-economic damages for the loss of love and companionship from their deceased child; pre-death pain and suffering endured by Noah; emotional distress suffered by both parents due to witnessing their child’s suffering; funeral expenses; and other special damages incurred as a result of these events.

Representing Jamie and Alan Bui are attorneys Benjamin T. Ikuta and Vanessa N. Raven from Ikuta Hemesath LLP based in Santa Ana, California. The case has been assigned Case No.: 2S O2O1 62 at the Superior Court of California in Sacramento County.
