A federal grand jury has indicted Curt Michael Taras, 53, of Folsom, on four counts related to firearms offenses. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Eric Grant.
Court documents state that on September 24, 2025, Taras was found in possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of the Folsom High School campus. Authorities later discovered multiple firearms and ammunition both in his vehicle and at his residence. Taras is legally barred from owning firearms or ammunition due to a restraining order issued by Sacramento County Superior Court. The order prohibits him from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner.
The investigation was conducted by the Folsom Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Abendroth and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Ng.
If convicted, Taras could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for possessing a firearm within a school zone. For possessing a firearm while under a restraining order related to harassment or threats against an intimate partner, he could receive up to 15 years in prison and another $250,000 fine. Sentencing will be determined by the court based on statutory factors and federal sentencing guidelines that consider various circumstances.
“The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
