California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced a lawsuit against the Trump Administration over allegations of illegal data sharing. The lawsuit aims to stop the sharing of Medicaid data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for immigration enforcement purposes.
Attorney General Bonta responded to reports that the Trump Administration provided ICE with access to sensitive personal data of Medicaid recipients. This action follows a multistate coalition’s lawsuit challenging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ decision to allow ICE access to individual health data. A hearing for a preliminary injunction is set for August 7, 2025.
“I’m deeply disturbed by the Trump Administration’s reckless and unprecedented weaponization of the private, sensitive data of Medicaid recipients,” said Attorney General Bonta. He expressed concern that individuals might avoid seeking medical care due to fear of being targeted by immigration enforcement.
Bonta emphasized the urgency in securing a court order to block this data sharing, stating, “The President’s efforts to pull personal, private, and unrelated health data to create a mass deportation machine cannot be allowed to continue.”
