California DOJ investigates fatal officer-involved shooting in San Joaquin County

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on December 2, 2025, in San Joaquin County. The incident occurred around 9:48 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 and State Route 12 and involved personnel from several law enforcement agencies. One individual died as a result.

Attorney General Rob Bonta stated, “The information provided below is based on preliminary details regarding an ongoing investigation, which may continue to evolve.”

After local authorities notified the DOJ, the California Police Shooting Investigation Team began its work as required by Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506). This law directs the DOJ to investigate incidents where law enforcement officers are involved in shootings that result in death. Once the investigation is complete, it will be handed over to the Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review.
