California Department of Justice investigates fatal police shooting in San Luis Obispo

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on February 28, 2026, in San Luis Obispo. The incident occurred around 5:00 PM and involved the San Luis Obispo Police Department. One individual died as a result of the shooting.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that this investigation will be conducted under Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), which requires the DOJ to independently review such incidents. “Following notification of this incident, DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandates. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review,” according to the announcement.
