California Attorney General Rob Bonta has outlined the state’s case against Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster as the trial begins in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit, filed in 2024 by California, the U.S. Department of Justice, and a bipartisan coalition of 30 attorneys general, alleges that Live Nation has engaged in unlawful conduct that restricts competition in ticketing and concert promotions.
Attorney General Bonta stated: “Live Nation has manipulated the market and made itself untouchable by any competitor — not because it is better, but because it has created a monopoly. This is illegal, plain and simple, and artists, their fans, and the live venues that support them are hurting as a result. In 2024, California, U.S. DOJ, and states across the nation filed a lawsuit calling out these egregious acts, and this week marks the start of our trial to hold Live Nation accountable. Live Nation harms fans through higher fees and a, frankly, terrible ticketing experience and threatens venues with loss of access to tours and artists if they don’t enter into long and exclusive agreements with the company. Add this all up and what do we get? Bad service, bad experiences, and higher ticket prices, all while Live Nation rakes in the cash. We look forward to proving our case and holding Live Nation accountable.”
The complaint asserts that Live Nation violated Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act by engaging in monopolization offenses—using its control over markets to exclude competitors—and also violated California’s Unfair Competition Law.
According to court documents cited by Bonta’s office:
– Fans have faced higher fees for tickets along with worse overall experiences than would be present in a competitive marketplace.
– The company allegedly maintained its dominance by requiring venues to sign restrictive long-term agreements under threat of losing access to popular tours if they partnered with rival ticketing services.
– It is further alleged that Live Nation leveraged its network of amphitheaters to pressure artists into choosing it as promoter over competitors.
The suit seeks court orders prohibiting anticompetitive practices by Live Nation, requiring divestiture of Ticketmaster from its parent company, as well as financial compensation for both California state government and consumers who paid inflated prices due to these practices.
The California Attorney General’s office plays an important role within the executive branch of state government according to the state constitution. The office operates statewide under Rob Bonta’s leadership (official website) serving as chief law enforcement authority responsible for enforcing laws related to consumer protection among other priorities such as civil rights (official website). Transparency initiatives like OpenJustice are used by the office for public data publication (official website).
Bonta emphasized why antitrust enforcement matters: ensuring competitive marketplaces helps consumers benefit from fair pricing options along with product quality improvements. The Attorney General’s commitment includes providing resources such as an online form for reporting potential violations.
