California Attorney General Rob Bonta has responded to a recent post by former President Donald Trump on Truth Social regarding the Census. In his statement, Bonta criticized Trump’s comments and referenced previous efforts by the Trump administration to limit the scope of the 2020 Census.

“During his first term, President Trump tried to prevent a complete and accurate 2020 Census count from taking place. My office took a leadership role in holding him accountable — we sued and were able to block that unlawful effort by the President. In the process, we ensured that California received both the Congressional representation and federal funding we were entitled to. We will be keeping a close eye on the Administration’s actions. Let there be no doubt: If necessary, we are prepared to take legal action once again. The U.S. Constitution mandates that all individuals — regardless of legal status — be counted. It’s not an option,” Bonta said.

Bonta emphasized that his office previously filed lawsuits against attempts by the Trump administration to alter how individuals are counted in the Census, which determines congressional representation and allocation of federal funds for states.

The U.S. Constitution requires that every person residing in the country is included in the decennial count, regardless of their immigration status.
