California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued the third annual “State of Pride Report” in honor of Pride Month. The report highlights the California Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recent actions to support and defend LGBTQ+ rights amid ongoing challenges to justice and equality.

“Pride Month is a time to celebrate the beautiful strength and diversity of LGBTQ+ communities, as well as reflect on the struggles, sacrifices, and historic accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ equality movement,” stated Bonta. Despite progress, he noted that LGBTQ+ individuals still face significant challenges nationwide.

“As a proud ally and advocate, I stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ community this Pride Month and every month,” said Bonta. He emphasized the importance of recommitting to the fight for equality amidst rising attacks on LGBTQ+ rights. “Today’s report highlights our commitment to defending, expanding, and advancing LGBTQ+ rights.”

The State of Pride Report provides detailed insight into DOJ initiatives aimed at addressing hate crimes and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals. It emphasizes the Attorney General’s Hate Crime Rapid Response Protocol which supports local law enforcement in handling hate crimes effectively.

The report also focuses on creating safe learning environments for LGBTQ+ students, enabling transgender athletes’ participation in sports aligned with their gender identity, and defending access to lifesaving care.

Despite progress, many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to experience discrimination and violence. Transgender individuals face high rates of poverty, unemployment, and homelessness. These challenges highlight the need for continued efforts to uphold and expand rights for all.

Key data points from 2024 reveal that 2.8 million people in California identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender—the largest number nationwide at 9.5%. The DOJ reported increases in hate crime events motivated by anti-LGBTQ+, anti-transgender, anti-gay, and anti-lesbian biases compared to previous years.

In 2024 alone, over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced across the country targeting healthcare, education, and public spaces. Additionally, there was a nearly 16% increase in reports of hate crimes nationally based on gender identity according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s latest crime report.
