California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the securing of approximately $720 million in settlements from eight drug manufacturers accused of exacerbating the opioid crisis. The settlements, involving companies such as Mylan, Hikma, and Amneal, will see funds distributed to states for addiction treatment and prevention. California stands to receive over $70 million.
Attorney General Bonta stated, “So long as the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities in California and across the country, we will continue to hold accountable those who played a role in fueling it.” He emphasized that today’s announcement brings necessary funds for recovery efforts.
The settlement amounts vary by company, with Mylan paying over nine years and Apotex making a single-year payment. Other companies like Indivior have agreed not to manufacture or sell opioids for a decade but can continue marketing treatments for opioid use disorder.
Most of the companies involved are prohibited from promoting opioids or producing high-dose oxycodone pills. The settlements were negotiated by several states including California, North Carolina, and New York.
